Sets class 11 Notes

Set – Set is a well defined collection of objects.

Example 1 – collection of first five even numbers

That is {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}

Example 2  – First 6 Natural Numbers

That is {1, 2, 3, 4, 5. 6}

Types of Sets:

1. Finite sets

First 3 odd numbers – {1, 3, 5}

Collection of Vowels – {a, e, i, o, u}

2. Infinite Set

Collection of odd numbers – {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 , . . .}

Collection of even numbers = {2, 4, 6, 8, . . .}

3. Equal Sets

A = {1, 3, 5} ,   B = {3, 1, 5}

They both are same and hence both are Equal

4. Equivalent Sets

If the number of elements in different sets are same/equal then they are called Equivalent Sets.

A = {1, 3, 5} ,  B = {5, 8, 9}

Number of elements in both the sets are same and hence A,B are called Equivalent sets.

5. Empty set or Null set

A = {} or A = Φ (phi)

Those sets which don’t have any elements in them are called Empty set or Null set or Void Set

6. Singleton set

Those sets which have only single element are called Singleton set.

A= {3} ,   B = {7}
