What are Relations?
I will try to explain Maths Relations with real-life Relations.
Brother – Sister is a relation, Husband – Wife is also a relation, Father – Son is a relation too.
Similarly there are many relations in our real-life.
Now move towards maths Relations. It is a relation between two sets.
For example there are two sets A and B.
A = {1,2,3} and B = {3,4,5}
It is given that Relation from A to B is (x.y): addition of x,y is even and x belongs to A, y belongs to B.
Then the relation between set A and set B is
R = {(1,3), (1,5), (2,4), (3,3), (3,5)}
What are Functions?
Functions are the relations which specifies that there should be only one image/output for each element/input.
Suppose there are Sets M and N
M = {1, 2, 3} and N = {D, B, C, A}
Condition 1 : If all the elements in M have image in N set
Condition 2 : And If all the elements in set M have only single image
Then it is called a Function.
If either of the two conditions does not satisfies then it will be a relation only.
NOTE: All Functions are Relations but all Relations are not Functions
You can also say that Function is a subset of Relation.
